After a brush with cancer, many people are seized by the desire to assist in the search for a cure.
Hundreds of those people will participate in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life, to be held this year at the Rotary Bowl track behind Nanaimo District Secondary School starting on June 12 (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.). The 12-hour national event will feature teams walking around the track to raise money to help stop the spread of the disease.
Funds raised will go towards research, prevention, advocacy and support groups.
Even though Sara Mazzei's father beat the disease and has lived more than two decades as a cancer survivor, she knows he's one of the lucky ones.
"When my dad was diagnosed with cancer he was specifically told that if it hadn't been for the research he would have died," said Mazzei, the Canadian Cancer Society's Mid-Island coordinator. "I wouldn't have had a dad."
She is excited about hosting what she expects to be the "best-ever" event in Nanaimo with more than 500 participants ready to lace up. More than $27,800 has already been raised, which puts the CCS in a promising position to meet their $150,000 target.
The relay is not a race, but more of a bonding experience to bring the entire community together to share their stories, experiences, laughter and tears.
The event is not just about remembering those who have died from cancer, but to show support for those living with the disease and to celebrate the battle of cancer survivors. Teams of 10 to 12 will walk, run, skip or dance around the track for 12 hours.
The only rule is one member from each team has to be on the track at any given time.
The night includes a survivor's dinner and victory lap, a moment of silence and a 'fight back' ceremony. There will be amazing musical entertainment and as always, Mazzei says it will be a night to remember.
"Really, it's just a big party. It brings the community together."
